President Donald Trump stated that Vladimir Putin should put an end to the war in Ukraine, rather than test missiles with nuclear engines, adding that the US has a nuclear submarine located off the coast of Russia.
On Air Force One, responding to a question about the tests of the "Burevestnik" missile, which Moscow claims flew 14,000 km, Trump said that the United States does not need to fly that far because they have a nuclear submarine off the coast of Russia.
"They know we have a nuclear submarine, the best in the world, right off their shores, so, I mean, it doesn't need to go 8,000 miles," Trump told reporters.
On Sunday, Putin stated that Russia successfully tested the "Burevestnik" cruise missile, which Moscow claims can penetrate any defensive shield. He also reported that Russia is beginning to deploy this weapon.
Since the first announcement of the "Burevestnik" missile in 2018, Putin has positioned this weapon as a response to US actions in creating a missile defense shield after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2001, as well as to the expansion of the NATO military alliance.
Earlier, Reuters reported from Washington that the Trump administration had prepared additional sanctions that could be applied to key sectors of the Russian economy if Putin continues to delay the end of Moscow's war in Ukraine.
