A third of 'foreign agents' faced criminal prosecution in 2024

By the end of 2024, the proportion of 'foreign agents' in Russia facing criminal prosecution has significantly increased, calculated 'Verstka'*. By the end of 2023, 21.2% of 'foreign agents' were involved in criminal cases, but now this figure has increased to 29.2%.

Out of 507 people recognized as 'foreign agents', 146 are under criminal prosecution. Another 'foreign agent' is wanted in Russia due to criminal cases initiated in Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Judgments have already been passed on 33 out of 148 prosecuted 'foreign agents': 25 in absentia and eight in person, six people received real sentences, and two were fined.

118 out of 148 prosecuted 'foreign agents' are wanted. The only one not yet added to the Ministry of Internal Affairs' wanted list but already sentenced in absentia is film producer Alexander Rodnyansky.

'Foreign agents' are prosecuted under 32 different articles of the Criminal Code. The most common is 'fake news' about the army, with cases initiated against 45 'foreign agents' under this article. The second most common is the article on evasion of 'foreign agent' duties, with 31 people prosecuted under it. In third place is justification and calls for terrorism, with 22 people prosecuted under it.
