Около 80 человек, среди которых журналисты, писатели и политики, подписали открытое письмо созданной Ходорковским Группы поддержки гражданского общества.
«Как жители свободного мира, обеспокоенные будущим глобальной демократии, мы наблюдаем тревожные события, разворачивающиеся в Москве и других российских городах за последний месяц <…> Широко распространенное беззаконие, арест политических оппонентов, насилие со стороны сотрудников полиции против мирных жителей, незаконное задержание детей, угрозы родителям — все это стало обычной практикой в России. В стране уже более 200 политзаключенных. Все основные права человека были нарушены, Конституция полностью проигнорирована, и выборы превратились в демократическую витрину», — говорится в письме.
Авторы отмечают, что при всем этом режим Владимира Путина добивался легитимности в свободном мире, «где его коррумпированные представители хранят свои деньги, собственность, семьи и вид на жительство и даже имеют гражданство»: «Эти люди, которые нарушают закон и нарушают права человека своих граждан, цинично пользуются правами и свободами демократических наций. Они используют наших лоббистов, адвокатов, бывших политиков и сотрудников разведки в своих целях. Они развращают действующих политиков и чиновников и оказывают давление на частный бизнес, заставляя многих играть по своим правилам и работать в своих интересах».
Российские власти не только ущемляют права своих граждан, но опасны для всего мира, говорится в письме. Россия аннексирует территории соседних стран, вмешивается в выборные процессы других государств.
«Мы должны занять бескомпромиссную позицию по отношению к жителям демократических государств, которые помогают президенту Путину и его приближенным отмывать украденный российский капитал. Банкиры, лоббисты, политики и консультанты должны признать, что любая помощь, оказываемая таким должностным лицам и их сообщникам, является недобросовестным (и часто оплачивается деньгами преступного происхождения)», — пишут авторы обращения.
В заключение они выражают солидарность с каждым членом всемирной оппозиции режиму президента Путина: «Каждый человек в мире заслуживает того, чтобы жить в стране, которая уважает ценности демократии, свободы и справедливости и активно работает, чтобы защитить их для каждого гражданина».
