Tens of thousands of people from all over Serbia gathered in Novi Sad to honor the memory of the victims of the tragedy that occurred a year ago. Thousands of citizens gathered for the memorial event near the station. At 11:52, the time when the collapse occurred, 16 minutes of silence were observed in memory of the deceased, writes The Associated Press.
A year ago, on November 1, 2024, a concrete canopy collapsed over the entrance to the railway station building in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, resulting in the deaths of 16 people.
Since December, protests by students, the opposition, teachers, workers, and farmers have been taking place in Serbia. Protesters regularly take to the streets, demanding not only the punishment of those responsible but also the resignation of the country's leadership. They blame the disaster on corruption, which they believe has engulfed the country.
In recent months, police have detained hundreds of people at protests, using tear gas and batons to disperse rallies. Before the memorial events, Vucic apologized to the protesters, stating that "all this hatred boiling in our society cannot bring anything good," reports AP. However, the protesters did not accept the president's apology and continue to demand early parliamentary elections.
