The head of the Deposit Insurance Agency Andrey Melnikov was detained on Wednesday and taken to the FSB investigative department for questioning, reported RBC citing sources in law enforcement agencies.
According to one of the interlocutors, the official was detained after his former deputy head of the DIA Alexander Popelyukh, who was arrested a year ago on charges of large-scale fraud, testified against him in the summer.
In April of this year, Melnikov's second deputy, Olga Dolgoleva, who oversaw legal issues at the agency, was detained. The FSB accused her of complicity in Popelyukh's fraud.
The DIA is a state corporation that pays compensation to depositors of banks that have lost their licenses from the Deposit Insurance Fund. Melnikov was the deputy head from its inception in 2024 until 2016, and in 2022 he became the head of the agency.
