In St. Petersburg, the defendant in a case of evading customs duties amounting to more than 4.2 billion rubles, former deputy head of the local Rosreestr administration Boris Avakyan, who escaped from court yesterday, was found dead in the building of the Armenian Consulate General on Vasilievsky Island, reports «Fontanka».

According to «Kommersant», in August 2025, Avakyan signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense to participate in the war in Ukraine, due to which the proceedings against him were suspended. However, on September 23, a motion was filed in court to resume the case, as Avakyan terminated the contract with the military department.

When the court retired to the deliberation room to issue a ruling, Avakyan asked to go out for a smoke, went outside, and escaped. Media reported that he hid in the Armenian consulate, where he was later found dead.

Boris Avakyan was the former head of the largest customs broker of the «Saint Petersburg» trading port, and since 2010 he was the deputy head of the Rosimushchestvo administration for the Leningrad region. A criminal case against Avakyan was initiated in 2016. At that time, he escaped from house arrest and went to Armenia. In 2021, Avakyan was detained in one of the St. Petersburg restaurants.
