Former Governor of Kursk Region Alexey Smirnov admitted to law enforcement that he received bribes of 30 million rubles, TASS reported citing sources.

During investigative actions under the pre-trial cooperation agreement with him, Smirnov confessed that he received about 30 million rubles in 'kickbacks' from contracting organizations involved in the construction of fortification structures. In addition, the former governor of Kursk Region informed law enforcement that his former deputy Alexey Dedov 'also took bribes'.

Smirnov and Dedov were arrested in April on charges of embezzling 1 billion rubles during the construction of fortifications on the border with Ukraine.

The day before, TASS reported that Smirnov admitted guilt and is helping the investigation to uncover all episodes of the case. 'I admitted guilt, I am giving confessional statements, I am ready to fulfill all the conditions of the pre-trial cooperation agreement,' said the former governor.

Meanwhile, as part of the deal with the investigation, Smirnov received state protection. An agency interlocutor noted that state protection could also be provided to close relatives and other participants in the criminal case. He noted that primarily security measures from police officers are implied concerning the former governor, who is in one of the Moscow detention centers, is the main figure in the case, and the main witness.
