As writes Reuters, US Vice President J.D. Vance believes that European countries will have to pay the “lion's share” of the costs for Ukraine's security guarantees.
“I don't think we should bear this burden here... The President certainly expects Europe to play a leading role here. Regardless of the form this takes, Europeans will have to take on the lion's share of the burden. It's their continent, it's their security, and the President has made it clear: they will have to step up here,” the agency quotes Vance.
Additionally, Vance expressed his opinion about Putin, with whom he had several phone conversations.
“He speaks more softly than one might expect. He speaks in a certain soft manner. He is very thoughtful, very cautious, and I think that essentially he is a person who cares about Russia's interests,” stated the US Vice President.
As writes Politico, on Tuesday evening, the Pentagon's chief political officer Elbridge Colby told a small group of allies that the US plans to play a minimal role in providing security guarantees in Ukraine.
According to two historians of the publication, the heads of defense departments of the UK, France, Germany, and Finland demanded from the American side to inform what troops and air assets it would provide to Ukraine to maintain a peace agreement with Russia.
“It is becoming obvious that on the ground, Europe will do this,” said one of the NATO diplomats. “The US is not ready for anything.”
Meanwhile, on Monday, Trump stated that he was ready to send American troops to Ukraine. But on Tuesday, he backtracked, stating that he was ready to provide air support to European troops.
