Arab and Muslim states, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, have made a joint call for the first time for Hamas to disarm and relinquish power in the Gaza Strip as part of efforts to end the war in this territory, writes CNN. The relevant declaration was signed at a UN conference by 22 members of the League of Arab States, the entire European Union, and 17 other countries.
«Governance, law enforcement, and security throughout the Palestinian territory should be exclusively carried out by the Palestinian Authority with appropriate international support», — states the joint document. It also notes that Hamas must end its rule in Gaza «to create a sovereign and independent Palestinian state».
Additionally, the text condemns the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which is the first time such condemnation is voiced by Saudi Arabia and many Muslim countries.
Previously, the President of Egypt proposed creating a Palestinian committee for the temporary administration of Gaza, which would take over the functions of Hamas and eventually transfer power to the Palestinian Authority.
