US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday fired several more Justice Department employees who worked for Special Prosecutor Jack Smith as part of the investigation into President Donald Trump's handling of secret documents and attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, reported Reuters five people familiar with the situation.
According to one of the sources, about 20 people, including lawyers, support staff, and federal police officers who worked on Smith's investigation, were fired.
At least two of those fired were prosecutors who until recently worked in other US prosecutor's offices in Florida and North Carolina.
On January 27, 14 lawyers who worked on Smith's team were fired. The Justice Department informed them in dismissal letters that they could not be trusted to implement Trump's program due to their work on Smith's investigation.
Including those fired on Friday, at least 37 people who worked on Smith's team have been fired since Trump took office on January 20.
Jack Smith initiated two criminal cases against Trump in 2023, accusing him of illegally storing documents related to national security and conspiring to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election. Both cases were closed before Trump returned to office.
