US President Donald Trump stated in an interview with NBC News on Thursday that the United States will supply weapons to Ukraine through NATO and that on Monday he will make an 'important statement' on Russia.
Trump spoke about a new agreement between the US, NATO allies, and Ukraine on the supply of weapons from the US. 'We are supplying weapons to NATO, and NATO pays for these weapons 100%. That is, we supply weapons to NATO, and NATO transfers them (to Ukraine) and pays for them,' said the US president. According to the American president, the agreement on supplies to Ukraine was reached at the alliance summit, which took place at the end of June in The Hague.
For the first time since returning to office, President Trump will send weapons to Kyiv, using presidential powers that allow the president to use weapons reserves to assist allies in emergencies, two sources told Reuters on Thursday. Prior to this, supplies approved by the Biden administration were ongoing.
According to sources, the package may include defensive Patriot missiles and medium-range offensive missiles, with the total cost of aid potentially amounting to 300 million dollars.
In recent days, Trump expressed disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin due to the lack of progress in ending the war initiated by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
On Thursday, Russia launched massive airstrikes on Ukraine ahead of a conference in Rome, where Kyiv received promises of billions of dollars in aid, and talks between the US and Russia, where Washington expressed dissatisfaction with Moscow regarding the war. Speaking at the conference in Rome dedicated to Ukraine's recovery after more than three years of war, Zelensky urged allies to 'more actively' use Russian assets for recovery and called for weapons supplies, joint production of defense products, and investments.
