In 2024, the world experienced the most wars and armed conflicts since World War II

2025.06.11

During the year, 61 interstate conflicts were recorded, including 11 full-scale wars

As reported by the British The Times citing data from Swedish researchers at the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, last year 61 interstate conflicts were registered worldwide, including 11 full-scale wars and other clashes that claimed the lives of more than a thousand people. Among them are the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as well as Israeli attacks against "Hezbollah" in southern Lebanon, the conflict with a terrorist organization in Nigeria, and the fighting in Tigray, Ethiopia.

The four years with the highest number of conflicts since 1946 occurred after 2019: in 2022, 56 clashes were recorded, in 2020 — 57, in 2023 — 59, and in 2024 — 61.

"Over the past decade, we have seen an increase in the number of interstate conflicts, and in 2024, the highest number since 1987 was recorded," said senior analyst UCDP Sean Davis.

The war in Ukraine remains the deadliest conflict on the planet: last year, according to researchers, about 76,000 people died there.

The year with the highest number of deaths in military clashes since World War II is 1994 — due to the genocide in Rwanda. The bloodiest year in the 21st century was 2022, researchers note.
