A FSIN officer hit his head against the gate

A FSIN officer hit mathematician and political prisoner Azat Miftakhov's head against the gate during a medical examination in Ulyanovsk IK-9, reported Miftakhov's support group.

As the mathematician recounted, he and other prisoners faced violence during a trip for a medical examination in IK-9 Ulyanovsk. A FSIN officer hit Miftakhov for 'not quickly enough following the order to stand in a safe stance'.

'Roughly demanding to do it even faster, he pushed me in the side. After that, I asked him to act within the law. In response, he began to excessively twist my arms in the safe stance position <...> I pointed out to him that continuing in this manner, he only further violates the law,' the anarchist recounted at a meeting with his lawyer.

During the medical examination, Miftakhov was diagnosed with chronic prostatitis, and the wait for this doctor's appointment took the political prisoner 2.5 years, notes the support group. Furthermore, the psychiatrist refused Miftakhov a prescription for antidepressants and diagnosed him with 'schizophreniform disorder'. When Miftakhov tried to describe his bouts of depression, the doctor simply 'shifted the conversation to philosophical topics'.

In the winter of 2021, the mathematician was sentenced to six years in a colony on charges of 'hooliganism'. According to law enforcement, in 2018, anarchists broke a window of the 'United Russia' office in the Khimki district of Moscow, threw a smoke bomb inside, and posted a video online. A secret witness, interrogated a year after the case was initiated, claimed that Miftakhov was among them — he allegedly recognized him by his 'expressive eyebrows'. The anarchist himself denied participating in this action.

In August 2023, shortly before being released from the colony on the first sentence, Miftakhov was added to the list of 'extremists and terrorists'. In September, he was detained upon leaving the correctional facility, and the next day sent to a pre-trial detention center on charges of 'justifying terrorism' for conversations with cellmates.

In March of last year, he received a four-year sentence on this case. According to the court's decision, the mathematician will spend the first two and a half years of the sentence in prison, and the remaining term in a high-security colony.

* Included in the list of 'terrorists and extremists'.
