Romania Chooses Europe: Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan Defeats Far-Right Eurosceptic George Simion

2025.05.19

Voter turnout was the highest in the last 25 years

The country's Central Election Commission reported that according to the voting results, Nicușor Dan received 53.6% of the votes, while pro-Russian candidate George Simion received 46.4%. The highest voter turnout in Romanian elections in the last 25 years was recorded.

The 55-year-old Dan surged to the lead at the last minute after trailing for weeks behind eurosceptic Simion, who wanted to stop military aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia. Dan campaigned on promises to fight rampant corruption, support Ukraine, where Romania plays an important logistical role, and keep the country in the European mainstream. On Sunday evening in the capital Bucharest, Dan's supporters chanted: «Russia, don't forget, Romania is not yours». Dan stated ahead of the elections that Romania's support for Ukraine is crucial for its own security against the growing Russian threat.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Dan on his «historic victory», writing on social media: «For Ukraine — as a neighbor and friend — it is important to have Romania as a reliable partner».

Two weeks ago, in the first round, Simion was the leader, garnering 41% with statements that he would continue Donald Trump's ideas in Romania, criticized the EU, and aid to Ukraine.

As reported by Reuters, after the election results were announced, Dan acknowledged that he faces the challenging task of finding a prime minister who can negotiate a majority in parliament to reduce Romania's budget deficit — the largest in the EU, as well as calm investors and try to avoid a credit rating downgrade.

«A difficult period lies ahead, necessary to restore economic balance, to lay the foundations of a healthy society», — Dan told his supporters.

The elections took place almost six months after the initial vote was canceled due to alleged Russian interference in favor of the far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who was banned from running again.

Simion built his campaign to capitalize on his support, making it clear that he would nominate him for the position of prime minister if victorious.

Speaking shortly after the voting ended, Simion stated that his election was «obvious».

«I won!!! I am the new president of Romania and I am returning power to the Romanians!» wrote Simion on Facebook*. However, he later conceded defeat and congratulated Dan on his victory.

The President of Romania holds significant powers, including heading the defense council, which makes decisions on military aid. The President will also oversee foreign policy, including the right to veto EU decisions requiring unanimity.
