Rosstat closed birth and death statistics since March

2025.05.18

This decision coincided with a historic anti-record: in March, the average daily birth rate became the lowest in almost 200 years

Rosstat closed data on the number of births and deaths for March, including by regions, in preparation for April, as the number of deaths increased by 15% compared to April 2024, noted demographer Alexey Raksha. In fact, since March 2025, there is almost no public demographic statistics in Russia.

Since March, there is no longer monthly statistics by regions: neither for births, nor for deaths, nor for marriages and divorces. The final data for the whole country is rounded to hundreds of people, and information on marriages and divorces is provided only quarterly. Raksha explains that this decision coincided with a historic anti-record: in March, an average of 3012 children were born daily, which became the minimum for the entire period of regular accounting—approximately 200 years.

At the same time, the demographer notes that state media report an increase in birth rates in March. Rosstat reports that 3.2% more children were born in March than in February, but forgets to add that March has 10.7% more calendar days than February 2025, and this March has 5% more working days compared to February (21 versus 20), meaning the average daily number of births decreased and amounted to 3012 infants. Before March 2025, the lowest number of births in Russia was in November 1999.

Rosstat also writes that the number of deaths per 1000 population for the 3rd quarter decreased by 0.8%, but does not indicate that in March it increased by 5.8%, notes Raksha.

After the start of the war, Rosstat closed monthly mortality statistics by age and regions since March 2022, and from 2024—all statistics on causes of death.
