The new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine could emerge in the next two days, writes Welt. «I am very hopeful that a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine will be reached this weekend», said Merz on Friday in Brussels. Considering the three-day ceasefire announced by Russia, there is a «great chance» that it will be extended to 30 days and that «then negotiations on a peace treaty can begin», added Merz.
Vladimir Putin on Friday unilaterally ordered a three-day ceasefire in connection with commemorative events marking the end of World War II from May 8 to 10. Ukraine did not agree to the three-day truce and demands a 30-day ceasefire. However, the Ukrainian army was ordered not to initiate fire, but only to respond to enemy actions.
The proposal for a 30-day ceasefire was also made by the United States, promising sanctions on Russia if it does not take this step.
This proposal is also supported by French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. «We signed a joint communiqué that largely coincides with the US proposal,» said Merz. «We are very hopeful that it will be accepted by the Russian side», added the chancellor, noting that now «the ball is in Moscow's court».
