US President Donald Trump confirmed the resignation of his National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, which was previously reported by the media. His duties will temporarily be carried out by Marco Rubio. He announced this on his social network Truth Social.
Trump thanked Waltz for his work in Congress and as his advisor, where he «put the interests of our country first».
«At the same time, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as acting National Security Advisor while continuing to effectively lead the State Department», — Trump announced.
For several months, Waltz was «on thin ice» as National Security Advisor, but his position became even more precarious after it became known that he organized a group chat in the commercial messaging app Signal regarding a secret military operation in Yemen and accidentally included a journalist in the conversation.
As reported by The New York Times citing sources, he managed to keep his position only because his dismissal would have been seen as a concession to the media.
Publicly, the US President expressed support for his National Security Advisor, calling him a «good man» who «learned a lesson» from the situation. However, a few weeks later, Waltz still had to leave the White House.
