The chairpersons of the foreign affairs committees of the parliaments of the United Kingdom, France, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine issued a joint statement urging US President Donald Trump to end the «policy of appeasement» towards Russia. The document, which was highlighted by the «Agency»*, is published on the Estonian parliament's website.
Donald Trump and the US Congress are urged to act as true leaders in the fight against the global threat posed by Russia as an aggressor state, and not to «succumb to blackmail and deceit». Putin is called a «war criminal» in the document, and negotiations with him are described as «obviously useless». «His main goal is to destabilize and disgrace our ally, the United States of America», the document states. It is proposed to do everything possible to hold Putin and others responsible for the war in Ukraine accountable.
Representatives of the European parliaments believe that «the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine cannot be a compromise or an element of external pressure».
In addition, they urge European states to immediately confiscate frozen Russian assets and direct them to support Ukraine, and call on the US and other NATO members to promptly accept Ukraine into the North Atlantic Alliance, as well as urge the EU to accelerate Ukraine's accession process.
«We cannot repeat the mistakes of Munich 1938», the authors of the document are convinced. Although the document is evidence of increased international pressure on Trump, it also shows a serious split on the issue of negotiations in Europe — it was supported by parliamentarians from only five EU countries and the United Kingdom.
