«Idel.Realities»* identified the names of 32,003 residents of the Volga region who died in the war in Ukraine. Of these, more than 10,000 people died in the last six months, and about 500 names were identified in the last two weeks.
The majority of losses are among servicemen aged 35-39, predominantly contract soldiers.
The study included Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Chuvashia, Mordovia, Udmurtia, Mari El, Ulyanovsk, Astrakhan, Nizhny Novgorod, Penza, Saratov, Kirov, Samara, and Orenburg regions, as well as Perm Krai. This list includes only those whose death has been recognized in some way by the Russian side, the relatives of the deceased, or educational and other public institutions. The actual numbers may be significantly higher.
The most casualties are from Bashkortostan — 5,268 soldiers, which is the highest number not only in the Volga region but also in Russia. A one-time payment in the republic for signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense is 1.6 million rubles, with an additional payment of about 700,000 rubles from cities and districts.
In second place is Tatarstan with 4,745 casualties. Those who signed the contract receive about 3.5 million rubles, considering federal, regional, and municipal payments.
In these two republics, national volunteer battalions have been formed.
In third place in terms of losses is Perm Krai with 3,518 names. Most of the deceased are contract soldiers, as mobilization in the region was conducted in a limited format due to exemptions for numerous defense industry enterprises. The regional payment from January 1 is 1.5 million rubles, and together with the federal part and additional payment from municipalities, contract soldiers receive more than 2 million rubles.
Journalists from «Mediazona»** together with colleagues from the «Russian service of BBC»** and a team of volunteers identified the names of 103,275 Russians who died in the war as of April 18.
