"If our efforts to stop the war in Ukraine fail within a few days, we will inform President Trump that negotiations are no longer a viable option," said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noting that the USA is ready to close this topic and "move on." Rubio added that the USA has supported Ukraine for 3 years, but now has reached a point where it needs to focus on other things. He made these statements at a briefing in Paris after meeting with representatives of the EU and Ukraine.
"Now we need to determine very quickly, and I am talking about a few days, whether it is possible to do this in the next few weeks. If so, then we are in. If not, then we have other priorities to focus on," he said.
The day before, the USA and Ukraine signed a memorandum of intent to conclude an economic agreement, and the Ukrainian Cabinet published the text of the document. It states that on April 21, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal will meet in Washington with the US Secretary of the Treasury to complete technical discussions on the creation of an investment fund within the framework of the minerals agreement.
It is expected that the negotiating teams will report on the progress achieved by April 26, 2025, to complete the discussions by this date and sign the agreement as soon as possible.
The document also states that the USA respects Ukraine's commitments, including those related to the country's accession to the EU.
