In 2024, a record number of sentences were handed down in Russia under articles on "military fakes" and "discrediting the army," as well as for crimes against state authority, calculated by the channel "We Can Explain"* based on data from the judicial department at the Supreme Court.
In cases of military "fakes," courts handed down 82 sentences, in 2023 there were 59. Under the article on "discrediting" the army, 63 people were convicted, the previous year — 46.
In 2024, the number of sentences under "terrorist" articles increased. According to judicial statistics, 31 people were convicted for involvement in "preparing a terrorist act" (in 2023 there were 19), for "aiding terrorism" — 38 people (the previous year — 19).
Under the second part of the article on "public justification of terrorism," which requires this "justification" in the media, 368 cases were initiated in 2024 (in 2023 — 257). Even without media involvement, under the first part of this article, sentences nearly doubled — 42 (24 — in 2023).
