UPD: The Meshchansky Court of Moscow sent the former governor of the Kursk region Alexey Smirnov and his first deputy Alexey Dedov to a detention center, reported the united press service of Moscow courts. They were charged with embezzling more than 1 billion rubles from the budget allocated to JSC 'Kursk Region Development Corporation' (KRKO) for the construction of fortifications on the region's border with Ukraine. According to the prosecution, Alexey Smirnov and Alexey Dedov led the participants of an organized group and, together with the leadership of KRKO, stole the funds.
The detention of Smirnov is reported by sources from 'Interfax' and TASS in law enforcement agencies. According to TASS, he is suspected of fraud.
Together with the ex-governor of the Kursk region Smirnov, his former first deputy Alexey Dedov was detained, law enforcement officials stated, adding that the investigation will seek their arrest.
According to sources, the former CEO of the 'Kursk Region Development Corporation' Vladimir Lukin, previously arrested in the case of embezzlement during the construction of 'dragon's teeth' fortifications on the Russian-Ukrainian border, testified against them.
Smirnov headed the Kursk region in May 2024, won the elections in September with a result of 65%, and in December already resigned voluntarily. His successor was appointed State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein. Vladimir Putin explained his appointment by the need for 'crisis management' in the region.
