According to «Idel.Realities»*, at least 31,631 natives of the Volga region died in the war in Ukraine. Of these, more than 10,000 people died in the last six months.
The study included Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Chuvashia, Mordovia, Udmurtia, Mari El, Ulyanovsk, Astrakhan, Nizhny Novgorod, Penza, Saratov, Kirov, Samara, and Orenburg regions, as well as the Perm region. This list includes only those whose deaths were recognized in some way by the Russian side, the relatives of the deceased, or educational or other public institutions. The actual numbers may be significantly higher.
The most losses are among servicemen aged 35-39, mostly contract soldiers.
Bashkortostan is the leader in the number of deaths not only in the Volga region but throughout the country, with the war claiming the lives of at least 5,170 military personnel from the republic. The one-time payment in the republic for signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense is 1.6 million rubles, with an additional payment of about 700 thousand rubles from cities and districts. Tatarstan is in second place with 4,690. Those who sign the contract receive about 3.5 million rubles, considering federal, regional, and municipal payments. National volunteer battalions have been formed in these two regions.
In third place in terms of losses is the Perm region with 3,477 names. Most of the deceased are contract soldiers, as mobilization in the region was conducted in a limited format due to reservations at numerous defense industry enterprises. The regional payment from January 1 is 1.5 million rubles, and together with the federal part and an additional payment from municipalities, contract soldiers will receive more than 2 million rubles.
The least losses among the Volga regions to date have been suffered by the Penza region and Mordovia — 671 and 432 respectively. In the Penza region, the minimum one-time payment for signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense is 400 thousand rubles, while in Mordovia, 1.1 million rubles are paid for going to war.
