The far-right party «Alternative for Germany» (AfD) has surpassed the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union bloc (CDU/CSU) for the first time and topped the German political party ranking with 25% support, writes Reuters.
According to the latest Sunday survey by the public opinion research institute Ipsos, the CDU and CSU dropped by five percentage points to 24 percent — the lowest figure in the last three years.
Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is still supported by 15%, the «Greens» lost one percent and now have 11% support, while the «Left» increased their popularity by two percentage points — to 11%, showing the best result since 2016.
The Ipsos survey was conducted from April 4 to 5 among 1,000 respondents.
After the elections, the head of the CDU/CSU and the likely future Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, announced his intention to form a new government by Easter, which will be celebrated on April 20 this year in the country.
In the last parliamentary elections in February, the far-right received 19.5% of the votes.
