NYT: Bloomberg to Fund Long-Term Legal Battle Against Trump, Allocating $10 Million for Attorneys General Campaigns

2025.04.08

This move aims to protect states from the actions of the Trump administration, as prosecutors "try to uphold the rule of law"

Michael R. Bloomberg's gun control group plans to spend $10 million to help elect Democratic attorneys general in 2025-26, which should help protect the rule of law and democracy while President Trump occupies the White House, writes The New York Times.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety President John Feinblatt, the organization will support Democratic candidates in 10 competitive states, including Virginia, Arizona, Georgia, Minnesota, Nevada, and Wisconsin. He noted that this will be a separate initiative called the Everytown Rule of Law Fund, aimed at protecting states from the actions of the Trump administration, rather than serving as an offensive guide for gun control measures.

Attorneys general "are trying to uphold the rule of law," said Feinblatt. "They are trying to protect those things that are in every basic textbook of American democracy." He also added that prosecutors, who are now at the forefront of the fight for democracy, should be aware of the support. "We want to make sure that attorneys general know that groups like ours will support them if they do the right thing, and we want them to know that we have their backs today and will have their backs in 2026," Feinblatt stated.

As NYT writes, Democratic attorneys general have filed a number of lawsuits against the Trump administration's efforts to close federal agencies and cut state funding. Since Democrats are in the minority in both houses of Congress, and the Trump administration is staffed with loyalists seeking to eradicate public and private dissent, the courts are a primary venue for liberals to mount meaningful opposition to the president.

This spring, Feinblatt's group already spent $553,000 on television ads supporting a liberal candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Candidate Susan Crawford won a decisive victory and maintained liberal control over the state's highest court.
