Germany confiscated the Russian 'shadow fleet' tanker Eventin, which sails under the Panamanian flag, and in January lost control and drifted near the northern coast of the country, reported Der Spiegel. By decision of the Main Customs Office, the outdated tanker itself and the approximately 100,000 tons of crude oil on it, worth more than €40 million, become the property of Germany.
The tanker was traveling from the Russian port of Ust-Luga through the Baltic to Egypt. After Eventin lost control in January, it was towed to the waters of the city of Sassnitz, where Eventin was guarded around the clock by the coast guard and federal police. Since the end of February, it has been officially listed by the EU as part of the Russian 'shadow fleet'.
According to the publication, Eventin will be re-registered under a different flag. A plan is currently being developed for the safe pumping of oil from the vessel.
