In Belgrade, hundreds of thousands of people demanded the resignation of the government. The rally includes not only residents of the capital but also residents from other major cities. The driving force of the protests is students, joined by teachers and professors, farmers, and other residents of Serbia.
Mass protests in Serbia have been ongoing since November 2024, after a concrete canopy collapsed at the station in the city of Novi Sad, killing 15 people. Many citizens believe that the canopy collapsed due to poor-quality reconstruction and blame corruption for the deaths. The date of the rally was chosen based on the number of victims — March 15.
According to official data, 107 thousand people gathered on the streets of Belgrade, unofficially — from several hundred thousand to a million people. The Branko Bridge, which leads to the city center, is blocked, and intercity transport is canceled.
Students from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Political Science jointly brought a Trojan horse on wheels over three meters high to the rally — the statue was placed in front of the parliament. Nearby, a camp of supporters of President Aleksandar Vučić was set up. Demonstrators demand that the President of Serbia take responsibility for the deaths of 15 people due to the collapse of the canopy at the railway station. Opposition supporters claim that the disaster occurred due to government incompetence and corruption.
Amid the protests in January 2025, the Prime Minister of Serbia and former mayor of Novi Sad, Miloš Vučević, announced his resignation. It was supposed to be accepted by the parliament, but this has not happened.
