In the center of Mannheim (Baden-Württemberg), a car at high speed crashed into a crowd of people in the pedestrian zone near a shopping center. According to BILD, two people died, and 25 others were injured. Among the 25 injured, at least 15 people are in serious condition. According to eyewitnesses, a black SUV crashed into the crowd.

The news agency DPA reports at least one fatality. The newspaper Rheinpfalz adds that an emergency alert has been declared in the intensive care unit of the Mannheim University Clinic.

The police have cordoned off the area and urge local residents to avoid the city center. As the publication writes, the driver of the car has already been detained, but his motives are not yet disclosed. Police officers with automatic weapons are on duty at the exits of the city, and a helicopter is circling over the center of Mannheim.

Law enforcement agencies have not yet clarified whether this was an accident or a deliberate attack.
