The driver of the car was a 24-year-old Afghan, and the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder, called the incident a terrorist attack

In the center of Munich, a Mini Cooper car crashed into participants of a Verdi union demonstration, resulting in at least 28 people being injured. Several of them—including a child—are in critical condition. Before the arrest, police officers opened fire on the car.

The driver was detained, and according to Bild, he turned out to be a 24-year-old native of Afghanistan who was in Germany with asylum seeker status. He had previously been prosecuted for crimes related to theft and drugs, but he had not been deported from the country.

The Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder, called the incident a terrorist attack, adding that “this attack shows that something needs to change in Germany—and quickly.”

Today, many Munich city service employees went on a demonstration as part of a warning strike, demanding higher wages, increased bonuses, and three additional days off.
