St. Petersburg publication MR7 was stripped of its media license

2025.01.21

The publication twice released news without the "foreign agents" label, after which Roskomnadzor went to court

Roskomnadzor filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court, citing the absence of the "foreign agent" label in two news articles on the site, which mentioned politician Boris Vishnevsky* and the human rights group SK SOS*.

"Roskomnadzor considered this an abuse of media freedom, despite the fact that the editorial team immediately corrected the mistake after the warning," noted the human rights project "Word to the Defense".

The Union of Journalists of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region wrote a letter to the Supreme Court in support of the publication, but Judge Nefedov refused to attach it.

A representative of the publication's founder "Cross Media" called such a punishment excessive, stating that the violations were accidental.

"MR7.ru" is an online publication that regularly covers political trials and public life in St. Petersburg.

Previously, Judge Nefedov recognized the non-existent "LGBT movement" as an "extremist" organization, denied Boris Nadezhdin's lawsuit against the CEC, and liquidated the "Party of People's Freedom ("PARNAS").

* Recognized in Russia as "foreign agents".
