This day has become a symbol of the anti-fascist movement and a day of remembrance for the victims of neo-Nazis in Russia

In Moscow and other cities in Russia, annual memorial events are held for lawyer Stanislav Markelov and «Novaya Gazeta» journalist Anastasia Baburova, who were shot in 2009 by a neo-Nazi from the «Combat Organization of Russian Nationalists» Nikita Tikhonov. This day has become a symbol of the anti-fascist movement and a day of remembrance for the victims of neo-Nazis in Russia.

As RusNews writes, flowers were laid at the site of their death in Moscow. Law enforcement detained one nationalist. As «Novaya Gazeta» writes, law enforcement asks those who came to «not create a crowd» and «not obstruct the passage of citizens».

The memory of Markelov and Baburova was also honored in Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Yaroslavl, Barnaul, St. Petersburg, Penza, and other cities. People brought flowers and photographs to monuments, hung banners, and organized memorials in various places.

Stanislav Markelov represented anti-fascists in court and fought for their rights. He, along with journalist Anastasia Baburova, was shot on Prechistenka when they were returning from a press conference.

Nikita Tikhonov, who shot them, was sentenced to life imprisonment, and the neo-Nazi accomplice Yevgenia Khasis was sentenced to 18 years.
