A section dedicated to Soviet repressions was removed from the Museum of Moscow's exhibition

2025.01.15

Previously, the scientific council approved the section, and the texts were written by employees of the Museum of the History of the GULAG

The disappearance of the exhibition on repressions in the USSR was reported in a Telegram channel by journalist Ksenia Basilashvili.

According to her, the first part of the exhibition «History of Moscow» was supposed to end with the topic of repressions. Using items and documents of the repressed, curators planned to tell about the «Shakhty Affair» of 1928 and the fate of the residents of the House on the Embankment. The texts for the section on repressions were written by employees of the Museum of the History of the GULAG, and the scientific council of the Museum of Moscow approved the entire section.

«But then, from somewhere outside, a wish came down to adjust the texts, and soon a demand appeared to remove not only the texts but the entire section «Repressions» that was ready at that time altogether», — wrote Basilashvili, publishing a photo taken during the exhibition setup and after the opening.

The day before, it became known about the dismissal of the director of the Museum of the History of the GULAG, Roman Romanov, who had led it since 2012. Anna Trapkova, head of the Museum of Moscow, was appointed in Romanov's place.

In November 2024, the GULAG Museum suspended its work after an inspection by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, which revealed «fire safety violations».
