Armenia's Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan noted that in recent years the republic and the EU have had quite intensive and dynamic relations. "The EU has expressed strong political support for Armenian democracy on various occasions. The EU was actually involved in ensuring security around the Republic of Armenia," said Mirzoyan.
According to the Prime Minister of the republic Nikol Pashinyan, the adoption of the draft law does not mean membership in the European Union. He explained that first, it is necessary to discuss a roadmap with the European Union and hold a referendum, as required by the Armenian Constitution.
Pashinyan also stated that when adopting this law "there should be a certain understanding of what actions will be taken, up to the possible holding of a referendum or not."
At the same time, the Prime Minister recalled that in April 2024, at the proposal of the EU, a trilateral meeting of Armenia, the USA, and the European Union took place, as a result of which a civil initiative was formed, "which in accordance with the constitution of Armenia collected 50,000 signatures and presented a legislative initiative."
At the end of June, the Chairman of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan stated in an interview with the TV channel LSM.lv that in the near future Armenia may hold a referendum on joining the European Union. He noted that the society of Armenia already has a decision on joining the EU.
