In Russia, the amount of fines for «LGBT* propaganda» reached 30 million rubles

The amount of fines imposed by Russian courts under administrative articles on the propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations, gender change, and refusal to have children has reached almost 30 million rubles, reports TASS with reference to the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of Russia.

The statistics cover the period from January 2023 to July 2024. During this time, Russian courts fined 125 individuals, 44 officials, and 27 legal entities. In 2023, 101 people were fined 16.2 million rubles, and in the first half of 2024, fines totaling 13.7 million rubles were imposed on 87 citizens and organizations.

In December 2022, Vladimir Putin signed a law completely banning LGBT propaganda in Russia — previously, it was only prohibited among minors. The law, in particular, introduced fines up to 5 million rubles for «propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations».

At the same time, the mythical «International LGBT Movement» was recognized as an «extremist» organization in 2023. After this, criminal cases on «extremism» charges began to be initiated against LGBT representatives. According to the human rights project «OVD-Info»**, 12 such criminal cases have already been initiated.
