The bill on «protecting the Russian language and restricting the use of foreign words» will be considered as a priority, announced State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin on the website of the lower house of the Russian parliament. «We need to preserve and develop the Russian language as an integral part of culture and spiritual heritage», — noted Volodin.
The bill, according to its authors, is intended to «protect the Russian language and significantly limit the use of Anglicisms and foreign words, primarily in the public space».
As stated in the document, signs and inscriptions, including information about goods and promotions, must be in Russian. It is also proposed to use the Russian language in the names of residential complexes, settlements, and neighborhoods.
In January 2023, Vladimir Putin included «counteracting the excessive use of foreign vocabulary» in the tasks of state cultural policy.
