In Russia, calls from IP telephony were banned — via the internet to mobile and stationary devices

2024.12.28

This measure was explained as a fight against fraudsters and added that the restrictions "will not affect regular telephone users in any way"

The Russian government has banned calls from IP telephony. This means that now it will not be possible to make calls via the internet to mobile and stationary phones.

According to the decree, the license "for the transmission of internet data with voice information overlay" is excluded from the list of communication service licenses. As noted by the government, this technology "allowed using the internet to connect with a person using stationary or mobile communication networks."

The government website's message notes that fraudsters used such technologies because they allowed number spoofing. Now this type of telephone fraud will be seriously limited, as "the possibility of connecting data transmission networks to telephone communication networks is excluded," the cabinet explained, noting that this decision will not affect regular telephone users in any way.

The technology that was banned allowed making calls through platforms like Zoom and Skype to phones, but does not affect communication through Telegram, Whatsapp, and other messengers. However, options for blocking voice calls are also actively being discussed in the government.

On December 26, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 55 arsons and explosions of ATMs, military enlistment offices, and police cars were recorded in Russia over the week, with a wide geography: Moscow and St. Petersburg, Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk, Tver, Tula, and Pskov regions. The department reported that 44 people were detained, who "acted on the instructions of anonymous curators received by phone." In recent days, the number of arsons has increased.
