In January, another former mayor of Vladivostok, Oleg Gumeniuk, also convicted of bribery, went to the front

Mayor of Vladivostok from 2008-2017, Igor Pushkarev signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense back in October, his lawyer Ruslan Omelchenko reported. Two months later, the former official went to the combat zone.

In 2016, Igor Pushkarev was detained, and later the court sentenced him to 15 years in a high-security colony under articles for receiving a bribe in an especially large amount and abuse of official position.

Pushkarev is the second former mayor of Vladivostok to go to the front. In January, Oleg Gumeniuk, who led the city from 2019 to 2021 and also received a sentence of 12 years on corruption charges, did the same.

In 2023, a law was passed "On the specifics of criminal liability of persons involved in a special military operation," which allowed those convicted of criminal offenses to sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense to be sent to the war in Ukraine in exchange for a pardon.
