The FSB revealed the version of the charges in the espionage case against US citizen Gene Spector, who was sentenced three days ago to 15 years in a high-security prison.
As reported by "Interfax," citing the FSB release, the American acted in the interests of the Pentagon and an affiliated company, the name of which the intelligence service does not disclose. The intelligence service claims that Spector collected "information on biotechnological and biomedical topics, including those constituting state secrets, for the subsequent creation by the US of a high-speed genetic screening system for the Russian population."
Spector was born in Leningrad but later moved to the US and obtained citizenship there. In 2015-2016, he held the position of chairman of the board of directors of the Russian medical equipment supplier "Medpolymerprom."
In 2022, Spector was sentenced to three and a half years in a high-security prison for mediating a bribe of 14 million rubles to Anastasia Alekseeva, a former assistant to the former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Arkady Dvorkovich. The official was supposed to assist medical companies associated with Spector in return.
In 2023, the US citizen was transferred to a pre-trial detention center on charges of "espionage." Journalist Evan Gershkovich, in his first investigation after detention, reported that the FSB's Department of Counterintelligence Operations was conducting an active campaign to arrest American citizens to secure the release of FSB killer Vadim Krasikov from Germany.
On December 24, 2024, the Moscow City Court announced the verdict for Spector in the "espionage" case — 13 years in a high-security prison. By combining it with the previous sentence for the bribery case, the American received a total of 15 years of imprisonment. He was also left with a fine of 14,116,805 rubles, awarded in the first case.
