«Reporters Without Borders» (RSF) published data for 2024, indicating an increase in attacks on journalists.
This year, 54 journalists were killed worldwide for their activities. Gaza stands out as the most dangerous region in the world for journalists. Since October 2023, more than 145 journalists have died there, with at least 35 cases linked to their professional activities. Asia became the second most dangerous region for journalists: seven killed in Pakistan, five in Bangladesh.
Additionally, as noted in the report, 550 journalists are currently imprisoned worldwide, which is 7% more than last year. This is due to the emergence of new political prisoners in Russia (8) and Israel (17). Almost half of all detained journalists are concentrated in four countries: China (124, including 11 in Hong Kong), Myanmar (61), Israel (41), and Belarus (40).
At the same time, Russia uses its prisons as a means of suppressing independent Russian (38) and Ukrainian journalists (19).
95 journalists are missing in 34 countries worldwide. The most journalists are missing in Mexico—five, three each in Syria and Mali, and two each in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Palestine, and Iraq.
55 journalists were taken hostage, 70% of them in Syria. This year, the only country with new hostages is Yemen: two journalists were kidnapped by the Houthis.
