2024.12.09

The Kremlin reported that the decision to grant asylum to Assad and his family was made personally by Vladimir Putin

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists at a briefing that the decision to grant political asylum to Bashar Assad and his family in Russia was made personally by Vladimir Putin, noting that there is no meeting with Assad in Putin's official schedule. He also did not disclose the whereabouts of the former Syrian president. Meanwhile, the Syrian Embassy in Russia reported that Assad and his family are in Moscow.

It is still premature to talk about the retention of Russian military bases in Khmeimim and Tartus, as this is a subject for discussion with the new authorities of Syria, which is currently undergoing a period of transformation and extreme instability, Peskov also reported. He noted that Moscow is doing everything possible to establish contact with those who can ensure the safety of Russian military personnel in Syria.
