In the closing arguments at the court session for this criminal case, the prosecution requested 11 years in a high-security penal colony for Andrey Moroztsev on charges of purchasing and smuggling drugs, reports «7x7»*.
Doctors diagnosed the student with idiopathic hypersomnia. As the young man told journalists, his work capacity is — «50-70% of the level of an average person, if following all recommendations and daily routine».
Last spring, Moroztsev ordered Indian medication for hypersomnia by mail, after which a criminal case was initiated against him for purchasing and smuggling drugs. The medication contains an analogue of modafinil, a pharmacy stimulant that in the USA, Europe, and even some CIS countries is prescribed to patients with narcolepsy, hypersomnia, and other sleep disorders. In Russia, however, this substance has been banned as a drug since 2012.
At the trial, Moroztsev's defense reported possible falsification of the case: the student's package was opened twice, and initially, there were tablets with one label, and later with another. Sources from «7x7» reported that the prosecutor in court behaves as if aiming for the most lenient sentence. For example, he does not contest the defense's evidence and supports its motions for mitigating circumstances, although the article itself is severe, with long terms.
Moroztsev is not the first patient with a similar diagnosis to face criminal prosecution due to ordering Indian medications. In early 2024, a physicist from Saint Petersburg, Andrey Volotka, received 4 years in a high-security regime for ordering modafinil by mail.
