In Amman, the capital of Jordan, an unknown person opened fire at the Israeli embassy and wounded three police officers. Law enforcement officers returned fire and neutralized the attacker, reported the Petra agency citing the public security service.
Jordan's Minister of Communication Mohamed Momani called the shooting a terrorist attack aimed at the country's public security forces. In his statement, he reported that an investigation into the incident is underway. «An assault on the country's security and an attack on security service personnel will be met with a harsh response», said Momani to the Reuters agency, adding that the shooter had a criminal record for drug trafficking.
Jordanian police cordoned off the area near the embassy, where several ambulances arrived.
As noted by Reuters, demonstrations against Israel often take place in this area. The kingdom has been the scene of the largest protests in the Middle East related to Israel's war in Gaza, as many of Jordan's 12 million citizens are of Palestinian descent.
