President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as a special envoy for the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, four sources familiar with the transition plans told Reuters. Grenell was Trump's ambassador to Germany and served as acting Director of National Intelligence during Trump's first presidential term. He was also the president's special envoy for peace negotiations in Serbia and Kosovo.
Although there is currently no special envoy exclusively dealing with the resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Trump is considering creating such a position.
In July, during a roundtable at Bloomberg, Grenell advocated for the creation of "autonomous zones" as a means of resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. He also stated that he would not advocate for Ukraine's accession to NATO in the near future.
As reported by Reuters, Grenell, who campaigned for Trump ahead of the November 5 elections, was one of the main contenders for the position of Secretary of State. Ultimately, this position was offered to Republican Senator Marco Rubio, which surprised and upset some of Grenell's close allies.
