The Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 attracted the attention of the Danish military due to anomalies in its route, writes Bild. It became known that the captain of Yi Peng 3 is a Russian only after the cargo ship was stopped.
The day before, two underwater telecommunications cables laid on the bottom of the Baltic Sea failed. One of the cables, 1173 kilometers long, connected Helsinki and the German city of Rostock. The cause of the malfunction is still unclear, and an investigation is underway.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has already suggested that the damage to the underwater cables was "intentional." According to one version, the cables could have been severed by an anchor dropped into the water or a bottom trawl. The Chinese cargo vessel Yi Peng 3 came under suspicion, and two Danish Navy ships followed it.
The German federal police have joined the investigation, cooperating with Finland and Sweden. A German coast guard ship has been sent to the incident sites to assist in studying the circumstances of the event.
The Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat previously reported that Yi Peng 3 was in Danish waters accompanied by a patrol vessel, and its route passed near the C-Lion1 cable at the time reports of its damage appeared on November 18. According to the Finnish operator Cinia Oy, the cause was "external impact," and the possibility of intentional damage is not excluded.
