The governing body of the International Criminal Court will launch an external investigation into Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan regarding alleged sexual harassment, two sources told Reuters on Friday. According to the publication, an internal document was sent to member countries of the International Criminal Court, asking Khan to step down during the investigation. "The prosecutor must immediately resign to create conditions for an independent investigation," the document states.
It became known in October that Khan was accused of harassment. The prosecutor denied the accusations and stated his readiness to provide all necessary information to the court's internal mechanism.
According to Reuters, the alleged victim of harassment doubts the independence of the ICC's internal body, as it is headed by a former subordinate of Khan.
Previously, at Khan's request, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova. ICC judges are currently considering a request submitted by Khan in May for arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders. Khan stated that the allegations of misconduct coincided with a disinformation campaign against his office.
