In the first nine months of 2024, government spending on VPN connections increased by 683% and amounted to 14.1 billion rubles, writes «Kommersant». The majority — 9.8 billion rubles — was accounted for by the Moscow Department of Information Technology (DIT). The number of tenders increased by 20%.
In «Rostelecom», they confirmed the increased demand for VPN connections among large customers, while in «Megafon», the growth in demand from government customers was described as «extremely high».
Analysts note that organizations are setting up VPNs to connect devices located in different places or regions into a single network. There are no publicly known procurements of VPN services for working with blocked sites in Russia. «Such procurements may take place through closed procedures», an expert from «Kontur.Procurements» told the publication.
Experts interviewed by the publication explain the increased demand for VPNs from the state by the increase in hacker attacks and the need to encrypt traffic.
